It is a self-hosted personal agent: a gateway you run on your own computer or server, a control UI, a CLI and a TUI, and connections into the messaging apps you already use, so you text it a task and it does the work on your machine. You bring your own model API key, or run a model locally.

Who carries the work
OpenClaw
OpenClaw gives you the whole stack. The gateway is the control plane for sessions, tools, events and channels, and you decide where it runs, which model it calls and which skills it loads. That also means you own the uptime, the upgrades and the backups.
Sidekick Pro
Sidekick Pro is a product. You sign in with Google and the assistant is connected to your mail, calendar and browser in a few minutes. You cannot read the source or change the internals, and that is the trade you are making.

The software is free under an open-source license. The bill is elsewhere: a machine that stays on, and model API usage, which for an agent running all day is the larger number. Add the engineering hours to set it up and keep it current.

OpenClaw's own documentation is blunt about the risk. Treat inbound messages as untrusted input, since anyone who can message the bot can try to steer it. Unknown senders on direct-message channels have to be approved as a pairing, and tools run on the host unless you configure sandboxing yourself.
Sidekick Pro
